The U.S. Border Patrol violates undocumented and documented people's civil and human rights. We must unite and fight against racist policies that divide our community. Stop the abuse! We are armed with video cameras and 'know your rights' cards as we follow and record the actions of the Border Patrol. We witness and document any abuses of authority or violation of human/civil rights. People are targeted by the Border Patrol based solely on skin color and language. We are also concerned with possible violations by law enforcement in their cooperation with the Border Patrol. Help us put a stop to these practices -- join us to peacefully inform people of their rights and oppose these racist and abusive attacks. |

TRUTH IN LABELING: Arizona Daily Star reporter Rhonda Bodfield did a good job presenting the Sierra Club's internal war over immigration limits. But it's a mystery why the Star continues to refer to Isabel Garcia as an "immigration attorney and civil rights activist.'' She certainly has earned her credentials as both. But since late 1992, she's been a public employee--a Pima County department head, as a matter of fact. Garcia heads the Pima County Legal Defender's Office. Like its sister agency, the Public Defender's Office, the Legal Defender represents indigent criminal defendants. Garcia is paid $80,388 a year. As for her immigration work, we thought she left that to her bankrupt husband, Jesus Romo-Vejar. The guy should really try harder to pay his taxes--it tends to tick off the feds when you don't. (Note: Jesus Romo Vejar, a Tucson attorney who belongs to the local Derechos Humanos Coalition, often filed suit against the Border Patrol during Ron Sanders' five-year tenure as Border Patrol chief, Tucson sector.) |
